MACKEREL SKY

meditation

MACKEREL SKY

One morning I saw
a sky so sheer, a mackerel sky,
though its colours were
pink, pearl grey and blue;

In awe I also watched
the sun light a bush in bright red,
followed by one in gold;
Breakfast was put on hold,

it struck me that I saw love on display,
Love of life itself;
Let the dawning day be our guide
open our eyes and mind.

All this I remember
on a sad and grey day,
when the sky seemed
to have drunk,
All colour from Earth,

And lost it somewhere.

Memories of bright days
sustain my heart;
In defiance I light candles, everywhere.
I even light a Star,

It shines in my window now.

  1. Thank you Roland and I am so glad if it gave you a soft start to the day.
    Nature is a daily wonder to me and I give thanks for my vision every day.
    Just now the birds are giving me a wonderful show on the feeders.:)

  2. A beautiful post, Miriam. It’s amazing how the light of one little candle can push against the darkness, and remind us that there is light beyond our current senses. These dark, cold days will soon give way to Spring, but in the meantime let us enjoy the opportunity to have a house lit by the soft glow of candles.
    First advent is near. Time to get my candles organised.

  3. Thank your for your kind comment. Today it is sunshine from a fully blue sky with new displays and delights.
    There is indeed light beyond our current senses and augmented with candles and soft lights they bring a softer season to us.
    First of Advent this Sunday.

  4. A beautiful poem Miriam. Yesterday, having over me was just the kind of sky described in your poem. But in true form, the sun shines through leaving us to bath in natural light.

    • I am so glad you liked my poem JC and that it gave you time to watch your own lights play between the clouds. Yes, the sun always shines through or we would live in darkness………

  5. A beautiful poem and post Miriam. Whether blue or grey, nature will always provide us with a sparkle and I love your act of defiance with the candles. A great reminder of the things nature provides for us (and it comes completely free).

  6. Davy D, thank you for your very positive comment. Yes, nature provides us with so much – and as you say, totally free. All we need to do is to open our eyes and heart and rejoice.
    Sometimes some defiance is called for.😊

  7. Lovely piece, I find the idea of a mackerel sky so alluring and the following lines sealed the deal for me ….

    All this I remember

    All colour from Earth,
    And lost it somewhere.

  8. Thank you for your kind and attentive comment Nigel.
    It is lovely that you find the mackerel sky alluring….good word….,
    I do too as it also let so many colours play.

    You picked just the verse that made me write the poem. I had scribbled first about the mackerel sky but needed a counter point and there it was – next morning.

  9. Miriam, you go and light those candles in the dark evenings…their brightness is as much a sign of ‘Love of Life itself’ as the stunning glorious morning sky you witnessed and shared so eloquently and poetically here with us all. The display, proof of real joy, gems in our lives is all around us…we just need to stop…as you did with your breakfast. BTW I love the two images: the latter is a delight of candlelight and I love the painting featured first. Is it yours? Are you a secret artist by any chance!? 😀❤️🌻

    • Thank you Annika for your beautiful and vivid comment. That you can feel
      so strongly from my words makes my heart sing. How right you are in saying that the gems of life are all around us if we but take time to look.
      I am glad you liked the photos, the candles were but a token of what I use in winter.😊 . The painting is actually one I did after meditating. The wave lengths of the brain just seemed to flow in colours. So yes, I do some painting.:)) 🦋❤️ .

      • Miriam,I love the painting and was going to say it was mesmerising…how apt that would have been! Lovely to learn about this other artistic side to your creative nature and hope you will share more of your paintings with us! ❤️

    • Thank you Miriam, your words have picked up on the wonder I felt and feel and I am sure you do each day too.
      Here the frost has arrived with the morning sun shining on glittering frost covered grass…and cars.😊

      • Ooh, it sounds cold, chilly and wonderfully invigorating. Here it’s hot, we’ve had a heat wave for days but tomorrow and heading into the weekend huge storms are predicted. Stay warm Miriam. xo

  10. Sharon, thank you for your wonderful comment, so full of life.
    Let us hope that the sky find all the colours again…before we
    all despair here in the Northern hemisphere.😊🦋💕 .

  11. Thanks for comment. The pink and the blue would not look the same without the soft pearl grey.
    They belonged together.
    A real mackeral now has much stronger colours but the shapes of the clouds gives them the name.

  12. I have seen that sky Miriam…the sky that drapes itself in ‘pink, pearl, grey and blue’… it is indeed a delight to behold… ‘ to have drunk all color from earth’ is a wonderfully imaginative expression. I love it. May your days be brightened by those candles dear friend. What an uplifting poem! Thanks for sharing it.

  13. Balroop, it really delights me that you shared the joy of that sky and felt its
    magic. Don’t you feel that the moments we let go and just feel there are words popping up that our intelligence would not have thought of.
    As to candles, yes they will burn this winter and a scented one is by my side just now.😊💕
    Thank you sweet friend.
