Shimmering Globe
Are we both vulnerable and strong
however contradictory this sounds?
Fragile in a world of dissonance
Yet strong in our love of planet Earth.
Its extraordinary patience and beauty
in spite of human’s foibles and selfish ways.
Are we destructive, yet also dreamers?
Did we lose our way; our purity
in hunt of falsely glittering symbols?
Did we forget the joy of a touch, a smile;
The comfort of a shared laugh.
Don’t think we are masters of this
shimmering globe;
Our home among the stars.
We are but a blessed part.
Let us live the dream of harmony,
Harmony between oceans, land and mankind.

I think our world is both fragile and strong too, and desperately needs our help to keep going…

Harmony is a lovely vision and goal. Life seems to be full of paradox, holding the tension of opposites like harmony and disharmony.

Thank you, Brad, for your thoughtful and lovely comment. There is certainly a paradox and tension between harmony and disharmony. are we capable of doing better?

A nice message for those who consider themselves to be the “masters of this shimmering globe.” Harmony is the key to peaceful existence. Well-penned Miriam.

I am glad you liked my poem, Balroop. Just imagine, we are all, each one,
responsible for this planet. I know I asked us many questions, maybe I felt the strength of love for Earth just then.

I recently told someone we’re all just walking paradoxes, including the earth itself.

As we carry both strength and fragility within I guess that is a paradox.
What was your friend’s answer?
Thank you Kate for your comment.

Nature does have amazing regenerative powers, Miriam, and a way of balancing things out. Hopefully humankind can learn to help instead of hinder and learn that we are part of nature, not independent from it. Thanks, as always, for you beautiful, healing words. –Curt

And yes, I admit to being touched by your last sentence.

Let us hold a vision for harmony. We humans live in a world of paradox. So we have the power to choose. 🙏

Thanks for your thoughtful comment, Bela. Yes, let us go for harmony.
The alternative might tear us and the planet asunder. 🌴.

I go back and forth, how much of the mystery is part of the necessary road we must travel to understanding… everything is part of the whole and therefore necessary even with the pain caused by the misunderstanding. But then?

Thank you, JC, for your intriguing comment. Could it be that mystery feels so because we are not yet capable of fully understanding. There seems to be more questions then answers ……

This is my second visit to read this poem. I had to come back to savor it again. You’ve captured the exquisite, novel beauty of our planet as well as the audacious concept in thinking we can master it. Earth is not ours to master but to care for and share with the planet’s populace. “Our home among the stars. We are but a blessed part.” Well said, Miriam.
