Solitude and Love

Solitude and Love

I know solitude, its peace and calm,
its loneliness at times;
It fills the shadows where your inner self resides
with clarity, truth and light,

I know love, its burning flames and gentle ones,
its soaring heights;
Growing in abundance and joy
in the dance of life.

Both have been sought since beginning of time,
as separate entities;
Yet, aren’t they part of the same?
Of the song of life.

So in a heart becalmed, the truth shimmers,
Let love dance free in storms and sun,
also to freely live in Solitude.

Never separate the two,
together they enrich and strengthen;
The ocean and sky live in you,
you live in them.

Free and true.

  1. Without solitude, books and of course my two felines, I should have gone mad long ago…

    Thank you for following one of my blogs. I shall be following yours as well so I can enjoy more of your poetry. Merci beaucoup mon amie.

  2. Merci beaucoup Lea, it is lovely to have you here and I wish you welcome.

    Thank you for your lovely comment to my poem, Solitude is indeed so important for our inner and mental state. Love should fit there too if it is
    good. 🦋🌾 .

  3. Lovely poem, Miriam, and as usual getting to the heart of what matters. I think one of the problems that modern life brings is that solitude is easy to find, whereas love is more elusive. Finding the right combination, in the right proportions, is the secret of happiness.

    • Thanks for your thoughtful comment Peter. Today’s world is often too hectic
      to allow for real Solitude although loneliness is common. I agree that the right proportions can be difficult but not impossible.

  4. Miriam, wow! I’ve read this many times during my breakfast and each time I am more astonished at the philosophical and spiritual depths that are hidden in your words and thoughts. For me it was a ‘Eureka’ moment! The unity so love and solitude self-evident, once we’ve been shown the way! I love how you write that solitude ‘… fills the shadows where your inner self resides/ with clarity, truth and light’. Your poetic description is wonderful and I feel myself floating, amongst the ocean and the sky! A perfect start to my day and a poem that will stay with me.

    • Thank you for your beautiful comment Annika and how happy I am if you
      felt that ‘Eurreka’ moment. Philosophical and spiritual, if you felt this I am one
      happy poet. You keep on floating between the sky and ocean for a while and stay outside daily worries. 😊🦋 .

  5. An intriguing and insightful poem Miriam. It perhaps may be that solitude allows us to see/feel love for real. It is so very easy to ‘be in love’, enjoying intimacy, and laughter and just having a partner. But that is not what we are talking about. I think solitude filters out, as Peter says, modern life and its ‘fast pace and false face’, revealing the truth.
    And let us not forget that there are many other forms of love. Again we talk of ‘loving the countryside’ but there’s also the ‘in tune’, ‘as one’ feeling of completeness, which can only be described as love, that some people, like you perhaps ?, feel for nature. The feeling we get from being in the natural world is love with an ‘L’. In this instance the solitude and love are the same.

    Lovely, lovely piece Miriam.

  6. Thank you for your wonderful comment Nigel, as usual it touches my heart.

    First I want to say how astonished I was when your ‘like’ showed a poem I hadn’t seen ” About a woman”. You write also about Solitude…..amazing how often this happens with our poems.

    Yes, Solitude allows us the calm and inner peace to be able to give and receive love deeply. Be it between man and woman or as you so rightly point out – love for all aspects of nature. Yes, I am lucky as this is a very real thing for me. Every day, whatever the weather. Yes, this love is unquestioning and totally part of us. When a woman and man reach that they are truly one.

    • Thank you for your lovely comment Jaqui. I searched long for images
      to go with the words. The swing is alone with a girl and a bird. Yet, it has the sky and the earth.

      The dancing girl might be a tad more advanced than most if us😊 but she
      looks free and loving where she is. I thought it was a moonlit night. 😘 .

  7. Beautiful words, Miriam, expressing the various nuances of solitude and love. As you said, both are vital parts of the song of life, in all their loneliness and even heartache. I enjoy my solitude just as much as I enjoy being with family and friends. Both are rewarding in their own right. I also love your last few lines, “the ocean and sky live in you, you live in them.” Lovely!

  8. Thank you Lauren, you give me a beautiful comment. Like you I also
    love the company of friends and family. To meet people wherever I walk in
    life. There is a balance to be found and I know for myself that without Solitude I will empty my inner well.
