Find your Habitat

Find your habitat

The seagull does not hurry
as it sails the thermals,
Seeming so calm and content.

At times he will dive,
catch a fish;
Eat and rise in harmony again,

except when he finds the flock
Busy fighting on land.
Fighting for remnants,
scraps that we left behind.

Many say no. I want to be free,
find my food in the sea;
Then ride the wind and thermals.

Learn about the sky, the sea and wind.
Learn to be free.

  1. Miriam, I love how the seagulls and your observation of them has inspired this poem! As they fly in search of freedom, so should we learn to ride the thermals, learning to be free. This is a beautiful and tender poem, Miriam and the two images are perfect accompaniment. Xx

    • Dear Annika, thank you for this wonderful comment, so full of understanding and sensitivity. You are right and I can sit on a rock and watch them a lot. Sometimes wishing I could stretch out my arms and join them. But we can fly in our spirit and feel free. ❣️

    • Warmest thanks to you, Andrea, for your deep and beautiful comment. I am glad you understand so well. I grew up watching seagulls and terns in the sky. The serenity of these birds filled me.

  2. Serenity is a great goal in these troubled times, Miriam. I can’t soar like a gull but I do find peace walking in the woods. In addition to enjoying the flight of gulls, I’ve always loved their calls. Nothing signifies the ocean more to me other than waves. A beautiful poem for the times. Thank you. –Curt

    • What a pleasure to have you visiting, Curt. No, you can’t fly like a gull and neither can I😊. Their call does indeed signify the ocean . The waves sooothe with their eternal rhythm. To walk the forest, the woods give so much peace and the beauty of everything fills you. Thank you for your beautiful comment.

      • It’s a pleasure to have you back, Miriam! Last spring, Peggy and I took three months to travel up the Pacific Coast of California, Oregon and Washington from Carmel, California to Olympic National Park in Washington. We had weeks and weeks to enjoy seagulls, the oceans and the beautiful forests along the way. –Curt
