THE STAR

THE  STAR

I threw kisses at the roses
as they shone so bravely
on a cold December morning;
Making my heart sing,

as I polished the windows in readiness
for the Advent Star to hang and shine.
Preparing the table for the Crib
to stand serene, age old story to tell.

Every treasure transmitting love
warm memories,
from childhood and on.

The joy from the girl I was – and am,
from the children of mine,
as their exuberance and fantasy poured,
also awe.

In all this richness surrounding me
I saw the sorrows too and a whisper;

Cry my heart, cry
don’t fear your tears;
Smile my heart, smile
You are but twins within each one.

The strength of love won out, no space for tears,
as we rejoice in our creations, recognize our traditions
held in care and trust;

Sharing loving hugs

  1. Thank you Jim for your lovely comment, I am glad you liked the post.
    The Star light in the window is one of my treasures and I smile happily every year it lights up.
    If you want a star light in your window I am sure IKEA will have a selection. Not like this one but still lovely. 🌟

  2. Winter roses may make our heart sing but they also inspire us to stand firm in the face of misfortunes. Miriam, I like the way you have intertwined love, exuberance and tears…so inseparable from each other. Love is indeed strong if it is true. May love prevail around you as we usher the New Year with news hopes and dreams that smile at us like your star. Love and hugs dear friend.

    • Thank you for your deep and heartwarming response, Balroop. I am intrigued with the thoughts about winter roses, it gives an interesting angle to the unusual phenomena this year. I really am glad the way you have understood the poem, yes – intertwined they are.
      To be called friend is an honour which I happily return and wish you wonderful celebrations and New Year.
      Hugs and love

    • Sharon, thank you for the insight of your comment. As I was writing this
      poem – quite light of heart – the other side presented itself. Might we
      possibly always live with this duality within?
      Bless

  3. Beautiful, Miriam! And so poignant, especially this time of year. Memories of traditions and loved ones who no longer celebrate with us in person. The holidays are always filled with some grief for those we have lost, but there is joy in those we still have around us. Have a wonderful holiday season!

    • Julie, thank you for this generous and warm response. The whole poem was
      triggered by the joy of seeing the sunlit rose in the morning, isn’t that funny.
      I do so agree about our hearts holding both joy and sorrow but recognised they intermingle to a deeper capacity also for joy.
      I really wish you a wonderful holiday season too. ❤️ .

Your star inthe photo and your poem is the guiding star to your home and heart … with its aid and that of memories and tradition it helps you traverse the minefield of emotions, sadness and joy both intertwined… love and smiles winning through! The girl is still well and truly within you as witnessed here, full of awe fantasy and exuberance! Thank you for such a tender, thoughtful post and photos … who knew roses would bloom so in December, extraordinary! Hugs xx

  5. Annika, thank you for your beautiful and deeply felt response.
    I want to quote your beautiful line: ” sadness and joy both intertwined… love and smiles winning through! “.
    How true and although many of us will experience deep emotions frequently we need to let the positive win through. The girl within remembers strongly the wonder the parents gave and that lives on through their children.

    Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year Annika ❤️🌲 .

  6. Very comforting to me. I cried today finding my father’s jacket and then a handkerchief in the pocket to wipe my eyes which made my heart smile. I encouraged myself to feel my feelings and not push them away. So “Cry my heart, cry/don’t fear your tears/Smile my heart, smile….”….The affirmation feels just right.

  7. Thank you JoAnna, your response went straight to my heart. It is a great gift to have been of any comfort to another. They came to me as a solace too ….
    I find it so touching and at the same humorous that your father had the foresight to put a handkerchief ready for his daughter.
    I felt again the truth of tears and smiles being part of each other.
    Bless 🤗 .

  9. A lovely heartwarming poem for this time of the year in your part of the world, Miriam. Such a lovely read. I really liked the line ‘as I polished the windows in readiness’. I think that’s what many of us do when we prep and get ready for the holidays in December – and then we welcome the smiles and hugs and love all round. Strength of love and trust does win out at the end of the day…for these things are often earned over time, and when earned bring so much joy.

  10. Thank you for your beautiful comment Mabel. You are right, we do all the preparations to spread
    joy around us and within ourselves. There is also the age old respect and love of traditions that

  11. So beautiful, Miriam. I love the way traditions connect us to our pasts in such profound ways. The whispered words are sublime and I was struck most of all by the line: “You are but twins within each one.” A truth about life.

  12. Diana, thank you for this wonderful comment. I also do set store by heritage and tradition. A lot of yourself was formed there.
    I am so glad you loved that particular line as it came straight from the heart after a deep grief.
    There is always going to be two sides within us, with positive spirit the joy will dominate.
