Drunk on Joy

Drunk on Joy

Has it struck you at times, out in free open spaces
how very loud the little songbirds sing
how clear and distinct, from high trees near and far;
Yet their dome is the sky and walls don’t exist
.

How can their little bodies contain so much
strength, beauty and joy.
Yet, in between they work hard finding food;
Building nests and teaching their young.

I wonder if we think to much whilst they simply live,
rejoice in song and flight when work is done.
Or in between.

Imagine humans bursting out in song, just like that
without wondering if it is good enough, or worse
If you are drunk.

It occurs to me that it would be wonderful to be
drunk on joy and gratitude for being, here and now.

Sing and dance with happiness,
not being so correct.

  1. Miriam, a wonderful wish and poem – here’s to being ‘Drunk with Joy’! 😀 Humans never fail to create obstacles for themselves and I love your tender and thoughtful observations of the freedom and spontaneity of the songbirds. I hope more of us learn to be (at least a bit) like them! I also now have a fun picture in my mind of ‘imagine humans bursting out in song’ … that would be quite something!! 😀 Wishing you a relaxing and peaceful Sunday, my dear friend! ❤️

    • Dear Annika, thank you for your beautiful and thoughtful comment. We are indeed often good at creating obstacles. It made me laugh too whilst writing, the image of people bursting out in song.
it does happen at times and some countries more than others.
As you say, that would be something. Good for your health too. (:)

  2. Lovely thoughts Miriam! To be drunk on joy is the wish of each human being but their paths are different, as joy depends on their ways of looking at life and work. Dreamers often feel free to sing in joy to perch high or fly with the birds… some are earth bound and find their joy in own choices.

    • Thank you for your appreciative comment, Balroop. To love life even when the going is time
makes it easier to find joy. You don’t give up too easy.
we can be dreamers and yet find joy in our chosen work. Spiritual and yet feet planted on this
      beautiful Earth. 🙂

  3. Miriam, as much as I’ve always loved and appreciated birds, I’ve never thought of how strong many of their singing voices actually are. “…how very loud the little songbirds sing, how clear and distinct, from high trees near and far; Yet their dome is the sky and walls don’t exist.” Perfectly expressed.

    • Thank you, Janice, for your sweet and kind words.
Would you believe, I have come across this spontaneous singing in both
Ireland and Greece. It was wonderful to be there and become part.🌻

    • Thank you, Brian. Yes to the joy of birdsong in the garden.
I agree about the Robin, they are wonderful. Another bird that sits the highest and sing loudest is the Blackbird.
Together they make a beautiful chorus.

  5. Yes! Now that you’ve brought it to my attention, it has struck me – the power and energy of birds. Now, I’m smiling. Nature is always a wonderful teacher. Thank you for bringing this into clarity. 🙂

    • Ahh…., Robbie, thank you so much for your beautiful words. Singing definitely compliments being happy. My mother sang every day, doing her work. Sometimes as the windows were flung open you could here her soprano half through the island.
It is not an odd thing to do, you just keep singing.
      Bless 🎶💕.
