Masked Smile

Masked Smile

Baffled I stood there,
outside the big surgery
that dispensed Vaccine to the chosen;
A smoothly running conveyor belt.

Each one stood on colourful circles
two meters apart.
One circle line running in
One running out.

Behind a desk a friendly lady sat,
she asked my name and how I was,
I realized our voices can smile too.

Whilst behind our masks we smile
Hoping our eyes will convey,
care and togetherness.
Shared fear and hope.

  1. Miriam, I love your poetic take on this outing! I can relate to the ‘baffled’ emotion – my reaction to heading out on very rare trips to shops or chemists! Ahh … how wonderful that the smiles are heard through the voices, via eyes connecting from a distance. Beautiful and tender capture of such an important occasion… as always the positivity and goodness of heart and soul shine through! hugs xx 😀❤️

    • Thank you, Annika for your beautiful and deep comment. I am glad you picked up on the voices as I feel they become very important in masked conversations.
I am touched by the warmth in your words. 🤗😇.

  2. Peggy and I received our first vaccine on Monday, Miriam, and I must say it was something to smile about, and everyone was smiling. I think that masks have given new life to our eyes. A timely poem! Thanks. –Curt

    • Jennifer, maybe we could practice to better meet other’s eyes and listen
to the sound of the voices. Practice make perfect. Some health conditions
push you forward and that was for the good this time. 😊 .
Thank you for your lovely comment.

  3. Beautiful poem, Miriam, and it’s all in the eyes. Even behind the masks, the eyes show the smiles. I like in the first verse your use of sugary and conveyor belt. For a quick second, I thought of Lucille Ball in the See’s Candy episode. 🙂
It’s great that you received your first vaccine. Take good care! 💓

    • Lauren, I am glad you also see the smile in the eyes. After all they are called the mirror of the soul. Thanks also for your kind compliment.
I realise now that the word “ surgery” might have confused. Surgery is where we go to our doctor ( think you call it primary doctor). So the patients are on the conveyor belt. 😊.
Hope you are keeping well too. 💖.

    • Dear Andrea, I am so sure the other person saw the smile shine in your eyes. Your comment is so kind, may hidden smiles not stay normal too long. Hope we willin a while be able to create a better normal with more awareness of the treasure every day is.

    • Thank you for your lovely comment, Vashti. I love your enthusiasm so full of smiles. Your joy for your mom is so right and endearing. Your words about my poem makes me glad. I do what I can to stay healthy ….short of hiding under the table ….😊. You look after yourself too.
