Enslaved

Enslaved

The word makes me shudder and yet,
have I not been there myself? I wonder,
as I witness the seemingly subtle bonds,
that weaves a web for many of us;

Silken maybe, tighter as time goes.

Disguised under umbrella of love and fun
the bonds keep weaving with beautiful words,
with tempting events, tantalizing baits.

I wake up ever now and again and muse,
what happened to my dreams and plans.
All that meant life to me?
How easily did I abandon my gifts.

I should fly for while, to find me.
To recall and feel who I really am?
Find my dreams, my enthusiasm.
Set myself and my dreams free.

Find those who dance together
Yet leave space for all to grow,

In respect and love for each other’s Identity.

  1. This is such a thoughtful poem, Miriam. Great writing Perfect for these times when many of us are contemplating our place in life and what is important to us. Sometimes we should take a break and free ourselves from our daily grind to find ourselves again.

    • Mabel, thank you for your wonderful comment, it touches my heart.
Yes, it is important to find ourselves in order to live fully and strongly.
Within physical confines now, yet letting our spirit free creates an even greater freedom.

  2. Let us all dance together and not ourselves be enslaved with what is happening in our world from almost three to four months. Hope we all can learn lessons and start to love each and every human being and our environment with love and kindness. Lovely poem, Miriam.

    • Thank you for your lovely comment and I so want us all to dance together to
a tune of care and love. The virus has kept us house bound but for many there is also the enslavement of spirit. Where it is suppressed and dares not fly free. Both need to enjoy freedom.🎶🦋.

    • Thank you for your comment, Jacqui. The sheer spider webs, lying over the
meadow part of my land in Sweden, do indeed melt away in the sun. The big one gets broken by animals but every morning there is a new one.
      Nature just is remarkable.

Sadly we couldn’t spend summer there this year as there is no ships or airplanes. First, all keep safe.

  3. Your photos are stunning and your poem is beautiful Miriam. It is easy to become enslaved to an idea, a way of life, a culture and to not notice the bonds that tie us to a way of being that hurts others, or ourselves.

I love this – “leave space for all to grow,” I wonder sometimes if the challenge with this thought is we all want our ‘own space’ and forget we are all connected, interdependent and intertwined through life.

Thank you for your stirring poem and its thoughtful message.

    • Louise, thank you for your beautiful appreciation of both photos and poem, it is a soft balm.
You are walking straight in to the heart of my words. The enslavement by
wanting to please all the time, belong to the right beliefs, accept others decisions for you etc…., the list is long. That is a very personal pain and courage is needed to fly.
We definitely are all connected but we are also all unique. To accept and cherish the uniqueness is a joy and sets us free. 🤗.

  4. I don’t know if we ever get over the questioning/questing, Miriam. But never let your dreams die. And always make time for yourself. It’s great if another will give it to you and support you in your dreams. The greatest of gifts. (Likewise when you give it.) But don’t depend on it. In time, your friends and loved ones will come to accept and respect (if not wholeheartedly support) the time you give to yourself. In the meantime, there is great freedom (and flying) in your poetry. –Curt

  5. Curt, a heartfelt thank you for this deeply thought response. I shall indeed heed yours ur advice and never let dreams die and I agree about questioning/ questing. It is exhilarating and life affirming.
Friends and loved ones are of greatest importance but learning to depend on yourself is equally so.
I feel very happy that you can feel freedom in my poem.

  6. Those silken, subtle bonds make us human Miriam… many people yearn for such lovely silks that could wrap around them but true bonding never enslaves. it provides wings. Wishing you many such “umbrellas of love and fun.” Beautiful and profound poetry!

    • Balroop, thank you for your appreciative comment.
As to silken strands weaving bonds I would say they can either enslave or
give comfort. It all depends for what reasons the bonds are there.
Deeply shared love give strength and wings whilst false ones are destructive.
May you always know the ones that give wings. 🦋.

  7. Ahh …, Jet, I am happy to read your positive and appreciative comment.
Also so pleased that you like the photos from my paradise.
Our lives are indeed complicated webs. I learnt from these spiders to have patience and perseverance in order to create.

    • Ahh …, Andrea, I am glad you find it beautiful. So do I and it is amazing how much beauty the little creatures expand on a snare. I think we could both write a poem that is a praise to how uplifting the beauty is and artistic.

On the island I grew up, handicraft was very popular. Crocheting was only one of them. I still have a table cloth with same pattern as the spider web,
given to me by my father’s mother ( Farmor ). 😊.

  8. Really an interesting take on enslavement, Miriam. Your perspective is keen, and you are correct, though with age, i am less so (enslaved). One learns, i think, to draw (better?) boundaries. Or not. Perhaps it’s just my nature.

Lovely words to ponder, in any case. Aloha.

  9. I agree, Miriam, that we are enslaved to the systems. We are like hamsters in a ball, going around and around trying to balance all the moving parts in our lives including housework, children and work. It is easy to lose sight of what’s important in the relentlessness of trying to keep going.

    • Thank you, Robbie, for your deep and thoughtful response. You have so
aptly used the hamster wheel as comparison. So many have felt this often
or at times. Both physical and emotional enslavement causes loss of self and as you say, sight of what is important.

  10. Enthusiasm for my dreams seems to ebb and flow. Dreams change, but certain things remain, waiting for us to pick them back up again when the time is right. The burning desire of Who am ? smolders but had not died. You have stirred the embers.
