The Cloud

THE CLOUD

The cloud came down to rest on Earth.
It travelled so far, was filled
with water, ashes, sand and air;
Ready to drop its burden soon.

Not here said the sunbather
Here, said the farmer;
Go to Sahara said the third.

Confused, the cloud cried and lost it all.
The conflicting desires changed its calm.
Should we possibly just accept
Today is cloudy or sunny or rainy.

Not selfishly thinking of just us
however tempting that might be.

The poor cloud had just been floating about
doing what clouds do
Without attachment to thoughts.

  1. Thank you Jenanita , yes, the poor clouds need a break.
We are also having clear blue sky with unusual heat for the north. 😊.
Yet, we can’t do without them……

    • Thank you so much, Kate, it is indeed hard not to attach thoughts at all times.
It is worth practising though as we really can’t live in yesterday nor tomorrow.
I hasten to say that I have a long way to go. 😊.

  2. Evocative and thought-provoking poem! If a cloud feels the burden, it must be the personification, for clouds never get confused, they are an epitome of freedom, which doesn’t carry any caveats. 🙂

  3. Thank you, Balroop! The first line of your comment makes me glad. Isn’t this what we
hope for in writing. Provoke thoughts and emotions. I know how it started it off but when
I came back to read the poem again a few days later I saw a number of metaphors.

So my wish is that each reader can draw something that feels right for them.

  4. What a lovely poem with many clever metaphors, Miriam. This line stood out for me:
“Should we possibly just accept Today is cloudy or sunny or rainy.” There are times or situations where we simply have to accept the way things are because we are not in control. Then again, if something doesn’t seem right, do we just accept, or do we express our disagreement? These few words can easily tie into the civil unrest in our country. I also love how you personified the cloud, allowing your readers to feel empathy. And sometimes it would be freeing to not have attachments to thoughts. 🙂 This would be a good discussion piece for a group. Have a good weekend. 💗

    • Thank you, Lauren, for your interesting and appreciative comment.
It is interesting and satisfying to me that you can see these words as a basis of discussion.
You mention civil unrest … and more .., here I have no doubt. Our voice, each vote and
      word matters.
When it comes to nature’s manifestations I feel we can but work with it. Or watch in awe and silence. 😊.

  5. When I saw this photo, I gasped at how beautiful it is. What a relief it is when we just let things be, especially the things we cannot control, like clouds. Amazing and wondrous clouds.

    • Thank you, JoAnna, you are in tune with the clouds. What can we do but watch with
acceptance and wonder. We have had many days with heat and some fluffy clouds.
Today the sky is covered with darker one and gentle rain is watering the earth.

  6. Miriam, A very beautiful, yet poignant poem. “…drop its burden soon.” You are right, some welcome the rain and others suffer with the rain. Acceptance and non-attachment is a healthier state of mind.💕

  8. It can be quite distressing to listen to so many conflicting advice and opinion. It is good for one to know who she/he is for, and do accordingly (unless of course, his/her purpose is inherently bad).

    • Thank you, Imelda, for your very interesting comment. Yes, so many conflicting opinions really can make you cry. We are a bit like the poor little
Cloud and need to learn to listen to our own convictions. Tough at times.

    • Hi , B, clouds are fascinating and sort of personable.
The summer just seemed to flow away down some rapid of non planned events. Still, there is beauty in so much.
