Fear FEAR Fear

Fear  Fear  Fear

Suddenly the dark balloon bursts,
with force scattering to the ground
ashes and fragments in multitude,
insignificant now, once content is revealed;

Total silence descends, stillness arrives.
Yet I am bewildered by this drama.
Silence, total silence descends,
Lucidity in quietness, like a flower, grows.

Whilst the wind blows ashes and fragments away.

The sky is so very blue, painfully so,
I couldn’t see that before.
What happened
what was actually in the this fearsome balloon?

It blocked out all light.

Behind the ‘zeppelin’, so filled with fear and doubt
an exciting new adventure was waiting;
Was calling my name.
Whilst frightened I hid below,
unable to accept what it held.

Now I can see the blue sky again, feel the sun
whilst walking, at times run,
Towards the adventure ahead.

Let my bare feet touch the ground
hair blowing free in the wind,
Skin kissed by the sun and breeze.

  1. Yes! And aptly and beautifully expressed. We have all been there, beneath the zeppelin. And many have learned to wait out the storm. For always on that other side lies a sort of redemption. Aloha, Miriam! 🙏🌺💕

    • A warm thank you Roland. Enigmatic indeed, you encouraged me to look up the full meaning of the word and I enjoyed reading it up in the free dictionary.
The positive stanzas felt very important. Never to stay in the dark, to dare walk on and into the new.

  2. Miriam,
Fear seems to try and choke us at every level of life until the day we face it and embrace it and we finally see that we have the power over it like any other emotion. Beautifully written… jc

  3. Thank you for this lovely comment, JC. Fear, although a natural emotion,
often take on too big dimensions and , as you say, threatens to choke us.
May we all see this power that helps us to set ourselves free.

  4. Brad, thank you so much for your sweet comment. Yes, it is easy for us all
to be overwhelmed by fear as you rightly say. Maybe getting out from under
the oppression quick as possible. 😊 .

  5. Is this balloon symbolic of fears we hide within us Miriam? Is this situation dealing with coming out of dark corridors? I am in awe of the emotions that are trying to reach me through this poem but something seems obscure. Freedom is indeed blissful. I am glad you got us there.

  6. Thank you Balroop for your in depth comment. Yes, the dark balloon is a symbol of fears and uncertainty. That you can feel strong emotions trying to reach you is a warming compliment to me. I am not sure what in particular you find obscure so don’t know how to explain.

  7. Beautifully put, Miriam. Fear can indeed seem overpowering, but once removed, the wonder of the world, and life, is reveled in all its glory. Suddenly the future is lit with the golden light. The picture is the perfect accompaniment.

  8. Thank you for your appreciative comment, Peter. Indeed, fear can be overpowering but it is true that when you overcome the day will again
be filled with light. I am glad you liked the images.

  9. It is the line “The sky is so very blue, painfully so” which struck me, Miriam. I am assuming you used the words ‘painfully so’ in the context of when we suddenly come from the dark into light and the sudden constriction of the pupil is uncomfortable. But I read it also as in how sometimes fear paralyses us such that we in a sense become afraid of the light itself. The balloon analogy is terrific! Like fear it is nothing of any substance, and though large enough to blot out the light, the way it floats, its spherical shape both can at times give glimpses of the blue sky beyond and finally our fears often ‘burst’ of course, in the same manner as a balloon.
Out of interest Miriam the first image that came to me on reading the first lines was the ‘death’ of a Zeppelin over the Harbour at Hartlepool during WW1, a scene that was witnessed by my grandpa as a boy. The intention of the airship would certainly have created fear which would naturally have disappeared upon its demise. The point is that when I then read you had used the word ‘zeppelin’ further on, after my ‘vision’ I thought ‘Ah the entangled minds of poets again’.
My best to you and yours

  10. Dear Nige, it is wonderful to see you back again and thank you for this fascinating response.
The ‘ painfully so ‘ you have picked up so perfect. I do actually mean both but
didn’t expect both to be noticed. To me they very much were, as they were to you.
Our fears can indeed paralyse us unless we see what they are made of and keep knowing there is light. We just know it is there. And we underestimate our own strength when wisely used.

I have read the story about the Zeppelin and here you are, having a grandpa who saw it. Somehow the idea and shape of the zeppelin have since intrigued me. I would have liked to fly in one.
I like the ” entangled ” mind of poets. 🤗

Imagery is a funny thing, they sort of just appear and at times I can
see them as if they were real. 🎶🦋

  12. Wow! Miriam, a striking and vivid poem that captures the overwhelming darkness of fear and the wondrous light just beyond. You write with power and energy, reflecting the might of the fear, the drama as
    ‘Suddenly the dark balloon bursts,
with force scattering to the ground’.
Once the blue is revealed you vocabulary takes a gentler approach with
‘Let my bare feet touch the ground
hair blowing free in the wind’.
With your words ringing in my ears I am sure I too can reach beyond the fear! 😀
BTW I love your title and the middle FEAR in capitals! Works brilliantly.

  13. Thank you JoAnna, your comment is so welcome. The ” flight and fight” hormone produced in real fear is necessary but very harmful if constantly produced in response to emotional and imagined fears.
I guess I am talking about the latter. 🤗 .
