Conversation

Conversation is a flow of thoughts
of listening, truly listening,
response with the ease of ripples,
With the joy of a stream.

Let it be the smiles between you
and the tears too,
thus your hearts can meet
Sing in harmonies bright and new.

Your mind will want to play, so let it;
Care that the balls flying between
are soft and gentle.

Always mindful of listening to each word,
keep it still before the next throw.

Let there be quiet within whilst you digest,
kernels of truth and wisdom, let them sift;
Let them grow
whilst you rest in a forest glade.

There are shouts and angry speeches,
on media, podiums and private groups;
Don’t mistake this for conversation
suppression is a more apt sentiment.

So, please, join me by the clear stream
in joyful and caring commune.

  5. What could be better in todays world of social media. Two people having a conversation, really listening to each other. I like the way you expressed having a conversation by keeping your mind open and still between the flow of words.

    • Thank you Len for your beautiful comment. It is indeed not easy in today’s ” talk – talk” world to find time to really listen to each other. Be it two or more.
      To slow down and consider each other’s responses does work. It calms us
      down and makes for a warmer exchange.

  6. Ah! The joy of a streamy conversation in this digital world where people prefer text messages! Your poem reminds me of the smiles and tears that were shared once upon a time, quite rare though, may be sisters still share such a bonding and have time for each other to share those moments of joy you are talking about! Blessed are those who have one such person around them to have a meaningful conversation. Thank you for the invitation Miriam, I would love to join you “by the clear stream,” to admire Mother Nature and pen down some poetry together besides soaking in the joy of conversing with a loving friend. :)

      blessed and I am grateful. I have several friends to share such nearness and attention with, surely it isn’t that rare in spite of text and emails?
      If so, we better head down together to this stream, talk, listen and write.
      And share the thoughts we write about.
      I will bring a picnic too. 🙂

  9. What a heartfelt poem that reflects the development of a meaningful and enduring relationship. I especially like the line “Let there be quiet within.” Only when we are quiet can anything worthwhile enter our minds – chaos shuts it out. The photography is also exquisite.

  10. Sharon, thank you so much for your sweet comment. Yes, quiet within is as important as other conditions in nature for growth.
    This goes for friendships, romantic love, familial love ……in fact, any relationship.

    • You are right Jaqui, thank you. We need conversation in its real meaning which entails listening too. I am sad if you feel you are losing freedom of speech, that would be frightening. I believe we still have that freedom although if anyone listens is another matter. 🦋🌺

Conversation, real conversation as described so eloquently by you here, is a precious gift for all parties, when indeed it can swing between the playful, to the harmonious fulfilling quiet. As there is wisdom and truth in real discourse, so there is in your reflective poem. Well done for giving such an intangible topic concrete depth! 😀

  21. Another important and timely poem Miriam, and it is the poetic arts such as this that so ably convey a message. idea or concept when compared to conventional informative writing.
    I, of course, agree with the previous sentiments but would add that it is often the silences between the spoken words which conveys the most. Likewise, we talk with our eyes and facial expressions, things that can never happen in written conversation and indeed because of this often leads to misinterpretation.
    Poetry along with songs and stories, whether in good literature or film dialogue, are the guardians of oral conversation.

      Thank you. I am so delighted that you re-inforce my belief that the silences in between are as important as the words. I would say they are the birthplace.

      What we miss in writing is of course the language of the eyes, facial expressions and body movements – e.g. arms and hands …
      I love the way you see literature of all kind as the guardians of oral
      conversation.

  24. You engage us in such a great conversation here with your poem! I like the addition of silence between lines of conversation; sometimes I forget to breathe, take it in, listen. We all need that reminder.

  25. Ahh … Pam, I think we can all get breathless with excitement at times. That is right to as long as we appreciate each other’s tumble of thoughts.
    The thoughtfulness between is also wonderful as it stills the mind.
