WHERE IS IT NOW

astronomy-3188563__340

I wrote the poem / lyric below a couple
of weeks ago and smiled at its seeming
childishness. Snippets of strong memories
we all have but what is this. A song? A poem?

Listening to people in America talk with such
glow about Thanksgiving and family togetherness
I revisited this poem and realised.
It is just that, praise and gratitude to a home
and people who made it so warm and safe.

So, with this I wish you across the Atlantic a
Happy Thanksgiving and all of us gratitude to
love given in any form.

WHERE IS IT NOW

I once had a dream
such a beautiful dream,
But the dream flew elsewhere;

I now wonder, where is it now,
is the ether keeping it away?

I once had a doll from Aberdeen,
I loved her so dearly
She even could say ‘mama’,

I often wonder, where is she now,
did the loft fairy take her away?

I once had Red skiing boots,
they were so very new,
Smelled sweet and shone,

I wonder, where are they now,
are they still skiing, all red?

I once had a hut high among the rocks,
we built it ourselves,
It was a most wonderful place.

I just wonder, is it still there,
home for other young to dream?

All the treasures I once had
that gave me so much joy,
they still make me warm;

I only wonder, as they live in my heart
are they happy,
Knowing they are loved?

  1. This is a sweet reminiscence of childhood and all the things that defined those gentle years. I often regret what I’ve lost or given away but I still have the memories and that’s just as good as a doll left in the attic. Happy Thanksgiving to you, Miriam, even if you don’t celebrate the way we do.

  2. Thank you so much Sharon, I am so happy to have your thoughts on this.
I am sure that what we grew out of then came to give someone else joy and
the strong memories of the love behind the gifts will live within us. 🙂

  3. I love this. I also wonder about those things we lose in childhood. I still mourn the loss of a friend’s tiny felt lion I coveted. Finally I convinced her to trade it for one of my toys. And then I lost it. Not sure why I adored this little creature but he still pops up in some of my dreams.

  4. Thank you Adrienne, your response is so lovely. I do remember why
with the items I have mentioned and I am sure deep down you know
about the little 🦁. Maybe it seemed part of your friend’s love

  5. Some memories are treasured forever…your poem endorses them so sweetly and reminds me of many moments of bliss…they find a fleeting mention in my poems, as I have never really put them together. Your childhood wonders are lovely Miriam…that hut among the rocks seems so romantic! Thanks for sharing them.

    • Thank you Balroop for your lovely answer and I am glad the poem triggered more memories within you. I feel we are rich when the loving and warm memories could fill our hearts each day and still keep coming. That, I think, has often been my strength when hardships came.

The hut high among the rocks was special and deserves a poem of its own.

    • Thank you dearly Roland, your comment makes me happy as it triggered good memories for you too. All three stories could make several stanzas
as there was the history around. So I quite contained myself. 😊 .

Hope one day you write and include some of your memories.

  8. Nice offering, Miriam. I have had such thoughts myself, over the years. What ever happened to … and the ‘witch houses’ my daughters built from sticks on the shore of the lake in the woods. Wonderful that, even though others have traversed that landscape, the houses remain. Perhaps the faeries have preserved them. Love this poem. ❤

I agree there is a certain nostalgia but more importantly, loving memories
form our bedrock. I feel sadness for those who didn’t have any.

  14. Miriam, your poem paints a vivid and tender image of a wonderful childhood of love and joy, your favourite items cherished and still so alive so many years later. I’m smiling at the final question … I’m sure they knew they were loved and brought you joy. Whatever happened to your dear doll who spoke of ‘mamma’? BTW the images accompanying your post are pure magic, bringing us into another realm as we savour your words. Can’t wait for your next poetic creation!
