COMPROMISE
Will it shatter our dreams
or is it at times the only way?
To reach the ultimate,
should we walk a straight or a winding route?
Noticing how the old horse and cart weaved
a route with so many bends;
Still, he reached the dream and destination
of the traveller he carried abroad;
With some fun compromises thrown in.
As I drive our straight and black motorways
without compromise leading to my goal,
little sensory distraction on the way;
I wonder which route, was most humane?
A little compromise here and there
to smell the sweet clover or bypass a hill,
enjoy a picnic, listen to nature around.
Compromise or plan, it is our choice.
At the end, might it depend on the dream?
For some it is the journey, the lesson within,
for others, the dream to reach and expand.
No rights or wrongs as long as we are true,
True to our dreams and let compromise be part.

Beautiful musings Miriam. Like you said in this path there are no rights or wrongs as long as one it true to oneself. At times a small deviation here, a little compromise there makes life beautiful 💖

Thank you Radhika for your lovely comment. You say, a little compromise makes life beautiful. I like that. Yes, we need to be true to ourselves or our compromises becomes lassitudes and could make our spirit lazy. 💕

This poem expresses profound thoughts, Miriam. There are many paths to our destinations and you remind us that we may enjoy some more than others. But at what cost do we pave the pastoral beauty to build the easy and fast route? Lots to consider, well done to point out the possibilities.

Thank you Sharon for your strong enforcement of my thoughts. I am so glad.
I have often the same question in my mind and I can only see that they are all to make life faster and more economically productive. There are always pros and cons but we mustn’t forget our right to choose. That we mustn’t forget, as you also indicate.

Thank you Jaqui, you are so right. We and our society do not often believe that you can reach further and more contentedly by compromise when it feels right. After all, we are all unique. 💕 .

Miriam, your poem talks about pleasant compromises we have to make to lessen the burdens of life…there could be many situations that leave us wondering whether compromise is feasible.
The path of compromise is quite tricky, as it may lead you into the unseen lands. Tread carefully on this path, as you could meet many monsters…hypocrisy would try to allure you with smiling faces, trapping you with no choices.

Thank you for your kind comment Balroop. It is interesting how interpretentions of poems or books for that matter vary. I am talking about tough and life changing compromises. I could give samples from my own life but that would be a book. 😊 .
Like all routes, glamorous or winding it certainly is tricky. What is right or wrong? How to be true to oneself and those depending on you?

I believe in the dictum “just follow your heart” but all can’t do that, all are not bold enough to do that and all don’t have that privilege. We do make difficult compromises for those dear to our heart…we may regret in our deepest moments but given the opportunity, I would still do the same for a loved one.

Without compromise, we’re left with frustration or, worse, division.

I like this for it is true, one shouldn’t put all their marbles on one. basket. I can see a whole generation never having written words on paper.

my poem true. It struck me this morning that if we can’t compromise at times, life will make us. Or we could break.

Extremely caught up with your words that’s so true. The final destination/dream is the main thing; but at times compromise can open more avenues in achieving your desired. The journey and experiences play a huge part in fortifying us to handle our dreams better.

Miriam, within the whimsical of your poem you ask a deeply serious question that directly affects how we live our lives! So often we think there is no choice, the fastest route is the best … but as you delicately and beautifully describe to us:
‘A little compromise here and there
to smell the sweet clover or bypass a hill,
enjoy a picnic, listen to nature around.
Compromise or plan, it is our choice.’
How true that we must remain true to ourselves but that this does not rule out compromises during our lives … that is the true path. Who knows what discoveries we will make along the way?! ❤️

Thank you Annika for your fun and deep comment.
You say ‘ who knows what we will discover along the way’ and that is the truth. Those discoveries can be the most important pointers and totally set us on a route we had missed.
There is nothing wrong with being organised and have a steady rudder but
be sure to keep your eyes open and see, really see, what is around.

I really like that last stanza, Miriam. Because I think many aspire to ‘the dream,’ and when it arrives, they hold fast to it. Nothing lasts, nothing is meant to last. And so the disappointment overwhelms. When the middle road, the road of compromise, seems wisest all along. Fewer extremes that way 😉

Thank you so much Bela for your upbeat and wise comment. I saw you put
‘ the dream’ in a questioning way. If you tried this for many years and realise that you didn’t take time enough for life itself it is wise to take these detours and see what crops up. 😊 .

Thank you David, wish I could match your both fun and wise poem.
Yes, John Muir had a deep longing but I think the road might be a bit
tough. So many now follow but better equipped and without fhis aloneness
with nature he experienced.
Indeed, motorways are quicker. We use them. So many lives are played
out in the bubbles rushing along.
Choices … compromises ?

Well said, Miriam. I sometimes think compromises are the oil that keeps our life moving. At many points in life, the choice between black or white can be wrong whichever way one chooses. The “grey area” can often lead to a better result.

Thank you Peter for your lovely comment. Too often it seems difficult
to lead a life where you follow a straight line of career e.g. For some it works,
others it is not possible. There are too many intriguing side tracks to discover as well.
Keep you oil can at the ready. 😊 .

Thank you Julie for your positive comment. Compromise is not the most popular word but however could we live a rich life without at least some of that thrown in. I think we have experienced and seen what harm a fixated view can do.

What a wise wonderful poem! Those who don’t compromise might get to the end of their path sooner, but they’ll be there alone. Compromise is essential.

Wonderful poem with a wise message, Miriam. Without compromise, relationships with others might be virtually impossible. I like how you said that there are no rights or wrongs, too, just as long as we’re true to ourselves. Sometimes, that can be just as difficult as compromising, but essential for a contented life. xo
