Before giving you my poem ‘ Frolicking” I want to introduce the story behind.
I have travelled many times to Greece and had the great pleasure of getting to                       to know people in villages on two of the islands and to part take of their lives and traditions
As I love the sea very much I actually did walk down early every morning when most
where asleep. The tremendous freedom will always be with me as a strongly imprinted
memory.

Some have asked me about my Gravatar and the poem will
explain how this happened.
Below is also an extract from the internet, one of the beliefs
about the Dolphin; Delphini in Greek.

The delight of the Dolphin spirit animal is her
delightfully charming energy with a playful spirit
and a flirtatious smile, she seems to invite you on
the adventure of your life. Perhaps you wonder if
she is a mermaid in disguise.

The ancient Greeks saw the Dolphin as a blessed
symbol of the sea, a messenger from the Gods.
The Dolphin has always been a spiritual ally to man,
there are many tales of Dolphins helping people who
have been stranded at sea.”

Frolicking

Like a Dolphin when it leaps and dives,
she is undisturbed in her morning play;
Rising sun and glittering waves
bear witness to her frolicking ways,

Her all encompassing joy.

Just being alive, weightless, untroubled,
belonging to nature’s force;
The sea, the sun, the breeze,
Scent from Olive trees above;

At dawn she quietly walks down,
to the sea where only fishermen arrived,
walk into freshness without words;
Starts swimming, leaping , zinging with life.

Walking back across the sand
in early morning light,
stretching arms to the sky;
saying thanks to Life,

she hears her name being called,

The fishermen ask her to join
at the taverna by the shore;
ordering another kafe metrio;
With a smile she accepts,

feeling honoured by kindness bestowed.

That is when they tell her,
we now call you Delphini,
Blessed symbol from the sea;

with tears in her eyes,
she nods her thanks to each one,
realizing we are all of the sea,
the earth.

  1. A moving tale told in your powerful poem, Miriam. I’m pleased you felt able to elucidate on your gravatar. The story contains echoes of the northern selkies and of the great bond between humans and the creatures of the sea.

    • Thank you for your beautiful and deep response Roland. I have wanted to tell the story but found no way to share until a poem appeared to help me. It was a very ethereal moment for me.
      I know you have written about selkies and I will re-read your post and learn more. There is definitely a great bond between us humans and the creatures of the sea.
      A big subject to debate maybe?

  2. What a fabulous story, Miriam. I wondered why you chose the leaping dolphin as your avatar. It’s perfect for you, and I’ll think of your poem every time I see it. I especially love the stories of dolphins befriending humans. I’ve also heard of them protecting seas creatures from attack by sharks.

    • Wonderful comment Sharon, thank you. I am glad now I told the story and as I say above, it only happened when the poetic form came to me. When I saw I could get this avatar I felt blogging was o.k. for me. 😊 .
      Dolphins have a high intelligence and a complex language. They certainly have great emotional intelligence as well. Apart from being playful.
      We have a lot to learn.

      You have a wonderful weekend too

  5. I loved reading about dolphins, Miriam, your gravatar backstory, and your beautiful poem. I also wondered about your photo, so it’s nice to know where it originated from. Dolphins have always been a favorite.
    I also don’t usually include links, but your post took me back to an old, fun poem I wrote that also included dolphins. If you’re interested, here is the link, but please, no pressure: https://baydreamerbubble.com/2017/12/08/if-you-believe-2/
    Have a wonderful Monday! ❤🐬🐬❤

    • Thanks Lauren for pointing out your beautiful poem. I just now checked
      and saw we used the same image. Mine was from free Pixaby.

      Our take on joy is the same although the spiritual moment I experienced
      is going a different way. There could be so many ways to write about the creatures of this world depending on your feeling at the time.

      The depth that some animals are connected with humans is fantastic.
      Eagle is another … you could go on. Richard Bach used the Seagull with strong spiritual effect which I love.

      • I appreciate you checking out my poem, Miriam, but you’re right, your post was derived from a much more spiritual direction. Mine was simply fun and uplifting. I just wanted to touch on the dolphin common denominator. 🙂 I love Delphini in Greek, and I agree with you about the deep connection animals and humans have. Yes, and the Eagle and Seagull…we could go on and on. 🙂 Have a lovely day! 💕🌻

  6. A beautiful poem married to a beautiful story Miriam. Not unsurprisingly my train of thought is similar to Roland’s. I’m struck by the realisation of how even in the 21st C, myth and legend, the old ways never die out and indeed within some communities are still a part of everyday life.
    Perhaps this is because within these myths lies great truths and wisdom.
    Thank you Miriam.

  7. Thank you so much Nigel, I like your expression of the story and poem being married. One without the other wasn’t right for me. 😊 .
    No, I am not surprised you and Roland share the same take on selkies and I will during my stay here delve into the story about them.

    I do agree that there is much wisdom within these myths and legends, that is how they survived. They point the way and sustain us when the world could otherwise go to mechanised.
    Bless

  8. This is so beautiful, Miriam! And the dolphin spirit’s play and joy made me smile. I’ve always admired dolphins for their carefree and easy play in the ocean, and still they are quite intelligent. The bit of scene from ocean to taverna–yes, we all are of earth and sea. Heartwarming story. Thank you for sharing!

  9. Thank you Julie for your wonderful comment. Yes, the dolphins seem carefree in the way they play and are. Yet they also care and are very intelligent.
    I am so glad you find the story/poem heartwarming. I really do feel we do belong as a whole. We just need to find our way back again. 💕 .
